Consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds… (James 1:2). This cannot mean that trials or troubles themselves are happy experiences – of course they are not (James has in mind poverty, injustice, illness and the like) – but that it is possible to have a very positive perspective on troubles because of what follows. Trials are tests of faith and can produce perseverance and mature Christian character (verses 3 & 4) – when rightly responded to. So then, trials (under God and by grace) can become stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks on the pathway of life. May God give us grace to take hold of the extraordinary perspective of v2!
