More on Rewards

This is a good place to raise the matter of rewards in the future life. God has promised rewards. The word appears over 70 times in the Bible. We find it difficult because it does not seem to fit well with the idea of grace – God’s free gifts regardless of whether we deserve it or not (we don’t!).

It does seem clear, however, that there may be rewards in the life to come, rewards over and above salvation. 1 Cor. 3 introduced above is perhaps one of the places in the Bible where this is clearest. Salvation comes to us completely freely, by grace through faith (Eph. 2:8,9); rewards, however, will be given according to the quality of a person’s Christian life and deeds. Of course there is also the possibility of the ‘loss of reward’ for a Christian life poorly lived. There can be ‘no condemnation’ for those who are ‘in Christ Jesus’ (Rom. 8:1) but there will be reward or loss of reward for the way we have lived in Christ Jesus – ‘the quality of each person’s work’.

But God is so good and generous! He is looking to reward us further! On top of free salvation (from hell and for heaven), he has promised us rewards. It is grace upon grace!
